Skills Gap Analysis Templates and Examples
Skill gap analysis will help in making certain that your employees are always well trained and skilled to take on a certain project. At times in an organization managers tend to over generalize the skills of their employees. Based off of sound judgement they will then seek to apply an employee on a certain job.
When the project fails they tend to put all the blame on that employee when it’s their fault. They were the ones who chose the wrong person for the job in the first place. That’s why skill gap analysis is so important it helps you to look at an employee current set of skills and knowledge. Then analyze them properly to see if that person is the right one for the job.
If they are not the right person for a particular project you can then look to choose another person. Additionally you can even train them to learn that particular skill which is required of them if you have the right resources in place. To create a skill gap analysis template is pretty simple.
Excel is a tool you can use to help do just that. It is mainly based around spreadsheets. The good thing is that it comes with a lot of other features and tools you can use to modify your spreadsheet. That will help you to create formulas, diagrams, programs etc.
But keep in mind that Excel can be pretty difficult to learn due to the depth of the tools and features. You can get a bit overwhelmed at first sight but that’s quite normal.
The tutorial you are going to get on how to create a skill gap analysis template is going to be pretty simple. You can see it below.
Skill gap analysis template in Excel
1. You have to firstly look at your project and analyze it properly. This will help you to see what kind of skills you are going to need to get the job done. Make sure that these skills are going to have the greatest impact on your project.
2. Open up excel. Create 11 columns these are going to be name of person, complete work on time, design skills, business analysis skills, communication, knowledge of product, problem solving, total and training required. You are going to put a grade in each column between ‘name of person’ and training required. These are going to range from 1-5. 1 is very poor, 2 is fair, 3 is satisfactory, 4 is good and 5 is excellent. If a skill is from 1-3 they are going to need training to work on that particular skill.
3. You are going to use the total column to add up everything. If the score is at a certain level that’s acceptable you can give them the go ahead. If not further actions need to be taken. For the training required column it’s more of a yes or no question if they need training put yes if not put no. To add everything in each column you can use the autosum. To do this select all the data you want to add up. Go on home, click autosum and you’re done.
